Utah Tax Refund
Class Action Lawsuit

Did the State of Utah take your tax refund without going to court first?

A class action lawsuit has been filed alleging that, since at least 2018, the State of Utah has:

  • “Levied” (took) tax refunds without a court order

  • Seized joint tax refunds even when only one spouse is claimed to owe money

  • Taken refunds even when taxpayers dispute that they were at fault

  • Hired outside debt collectors to go after taxpayers without any court order

  • Held refunds and forced taxpayers to request hearings or hire lawyers

The lawsuit alleges that these acts were improper. If the State of Utah seized your tax refund without a court order, tell us about it.  NOTE:  This class action does not apply to situations where the State claims that you owe back taxes. It also does not apply to cases where there is a court order, such as cases where a restitution order was ordered in a criminal matter.
